Courses’ alignment with sustainability

The Sustainable Development Goal number 4, Quality Education, sets the tone for the importance of an inclusive and equitable education, promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all. NOVA, through its nine schools across three main areas of knowledge offers a wide range of academic degrees and courses. Their alignment with sustainability is defined using STARS’ reporting criteria, a global sustainability standard for universities. Each course’s content addresses one or more SDG.

The image shows the number of mentions each SDG gets in the 382 courses at all NOVA schools. One course may address more than one SDG. The graphical distribution of the courses per SDG is approximate.

This course aims at improving students’ understanding of how individuals and groups operate, and why they behave in a certain fashion when confronted with a given problem in a specific context. This approach should also enable students to critically think about their and others’ behavior and motives, rather than take a ‘right or wrong’ perspective. This includes moving away from a traditional ‘one size fits all’ approach, to a more tailored perspective where one takes into account how different cultures, contexts, and conditions may shape behavior. Relevant content includes: intergroup relations and conflict, social categorization, identity and discrimination or minority influence.

Description

This course will challenge the students to look beyond representations of the African continent as marked only by poverty and conflict. It will explore issues related to the creative potential of african societies for the creation of innovative employment and economic growth (SDG8 and 9) through offering alternative opportunities to Youth groups. The focus on peace, justice and strong institutions (SDG16) will remain central to the understanding of the processes of state formation in Africa and to compare contradictory evidence on trends for state consolidation and desintegration. Without socio-economic rights the current trend towards authoritarianisms across Africa and the return of coup d'etats in West Africa and in Eastern Africa cannot be mitigated because poverty, hunger, and vulnerability to climate change and a lack of opportunities remain paramount. Political rights that ae reduced to voting cannot sustain the wave of democratization started in the 1990s. The course will touch upon most of the SDGs.
