The course examines briefly the health impacts of environmental degradation and pollution, and of the extant bio-methods used for remediation with a focus on fungal remediation applicable to remediation of pollution in water and soil. Students will investigate strategies of how to translate the scientific knowledge on bioremediation towards valorization of wastes and residues, align with circular economy concepts and safe and sustainable by design biorefineries. Finally, emphasis is given on the impact of pollution on promoting emergence of opportunistic fungal pathogens impacting human health and food productivity and safeness.
