In using historical evidence, the purpose of this course is to understand markets in their intrinsic logic, and their relationship with central state at a global scale. This course will explore the role of private initiative versus government role as regulator of economic activities; the growing weight of public expenditure in macroeconomic terms, the war economies well portrayed by the two world wars and the emergence of social policies and security systems; nationalizations and denationalizations.
