IPSTERS is the acronym for IPSentinel Terrestrial Enhanced Recognition System, a project that contributes for an improved land management, by using satellite images, mainly from the constellation Sentinel-1 from ESA.
New algorithms for the automatic production of Land Cover/Land Use maps helps on the management of the territory, as is the case of the frequently updated evaluation of water reserves (Sentinel-1 has a revisit period of 5 days) which is of great utility for the planning of wildfires fighting preventing its negative impact on the environment and on the population. The evaluation of the land cover is also important for the creation of realistic simulators to support the authorities on disaster management.
IPSTERS is coordinated by Professor José Manuel Fonseca, from the Centre of Technology and Systems of UNINOVA, and contributed to the creation of a new product – Conjunctural COS – now available on the Direção Geral do Território website.
