Forest fire suppression

25 May 2023

foRESTER project developed new tools to support decision-making in the suppression of rural fires.

An optimized data fusion of sensor networks and fire spread modelling, early warning methods and historical analysis support the interaction between field operators and the decision-making process during the fire suppression process. Several prototypes or products were produced in the areas of sensors (e.g. mobile application that collects the data from a multi-sensor node), satellite and aerial image processing (e.g. to derive rural road network), fire spread simulator, decision support (web-based interactive visualization portal). The prototypes were tested on real scenarios (MacFire), with the collaboration of Mação Municipality as the end-user.

foRESTER was coordinated by Luis Bica Oliveira, professor at NOVA FCT and researcher at CTS-UNINOVA.
