NOVA University Lisbon is one of the newest partners of adapt.local – Network of Municipalities for Local Adaptation to Climate Change, which aims to promote local adaptation to climate change in Portugal.
Formalized as an association in 2022, this network has been working since 2016 to promote adaptation to climate change. NOVA has been a collaborator in this initiative from the beginning, and in 2023, it formalized its commitment to leading the way towards a country better prepared to respond to the impending climate challenges by officially joining the association. The membership was unanimously approved at the fourth General Assembly of the Association, which took place in April.
Through its various Organic Units, NOVA has been working on research and support for public policy at both local and national levels, for example in Inter-municipal Adaptation Plans. In addition, it offers advanced university training at the master’s level in the field of climate change mitigation and adaptation, such as the Adaptation and Risk to Climate Change course in the Master’s in Environmental Engineering programme.
Representing the University in adapt.local are João Pedro Gouveia, researcher at CENSE, Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering at FCT NOVA, and Miguel Castro Neto, professor at NOVA Information Management School.
