NOVA Medical School takes care of the community through a broad set of interventions.
The students’ union promotes health education and training at a national and international level by developing programs as free hypertension, diabetes and obesity screenings for the general population, including several parish councils in Portugal (some examples below). Lectures as “Physical activity in oncological disease” make the community aware of the role of physical activity, from prevention to survival, in patients with oncological pathology, and “Inequalities in Health” provide an understanding of the main challenges of exercising medicine in developing countries. Another example is the informative minutes spot (Research4U) about scientific research, to promote health improvement and healthy behaviors, for students and the general public. Also, open workshops held by Nutrition team raise awareness of the population to the adoption of healthy eating habits and encourage the consumption of legumes, associated with greater environmental sustainability.
Some examples of such activities are:
- Within the scope of the “Marca Mundos” Program, AEFCM organized, with students from the Integrated Masters in Medicine and the Degree in Sciences, free hypertension, diabetes and obesity screenings for the general population with the Parish Council of Samora Correia (24th and 25th April )
- As part of the Health Fair initiative, organized by the Arroios Parish Council, the NMS Nutrition team held the Workshop The importance of Legumes. The objective was to sensitize the population and the Fair participants to the adoption of healthy eating habits and encourage the consumption of legumes as a healthy food, associated with greater environmental sustainability (16th April)
