Years of research on the faecal microbiota at NOVA Medical School have shown that an imbalance of these microorganisms can be associated with several diseases. Therefore, restoring this balance can help treat the conditions to support life itself or its quality.

YourBiome Therapeutics, founded in June 2019, has the mission of ensuring effective and safe access to treatments developed from the transplantation of the faecal microbiota of healthy individuals, that is, microorganisms present in the faeces of and individual with good intestinal health.

Currently, faecal microbiota transplantation is indicated in the treatment of recurrent antibiotic-resistant Clostridioides difficile infection. Bacteria found in healthy donors can restore intestinal balance in the transplanted patient and can definitively fight C. difficile infection, with 90% of efficiency. C. difficile infection is one of the most prevalent hospital infections and carries a greater risk of life for users. The application of faecal microbiota transplantation in several other pathologies affecting the gastrointestinal tract, is already being tested in several clinical trials.
