In 2011, Pedro A. Lima from in the Physiology laboratory of NOVA Medical School (NMS) identified certain compounds of marine origin with high potential of use in the treatment of chronic pain.
Millions of years of evolution in marine animals have resulted in highly specialized and ingenious solutions for defence against predators, comprising compounds that have already demonstrated a wide range of pharmacological properties.
Sea4Us was created in 2013, from a partnership with NOVA Medical School and ITQB. The sampling process takes place in Sagres, in the south of Portugal – an famous area for its high marine biodiversity; and pre-clinical development is carried out at the NMS laboratories in Lisbon.
Now, Sea4Us already has solutions associated with neuropathic, inflammatory and oncological pain, as well as infectious diseases, urology and immunology, although at different stages of development. As a world leading biotechnology company, Sea4Us gives a new interpretation to an old fisherman’s saying, well known in southwestern Portugal: “pain and wounds on land are healed at sea”.
